Spartan Maroon and Gold played a great inter-squad game against each other yesterday! At halftime, the referee came over and complimented our team on how well we were playing and our conduct. Coach Tice let the kids know that was a big deal as that doesn't happen very often. In what was probably the highest scoring game of the year, Gold defeated Maroon 11-8. Maroon went on to beat College Hill 7-3. Both goalies played very well and I believe are the best in the league. We are trying to figure out how the teams line up for the tournament. Spartan Chumash played a hard fought game against College Hill and won 5-4. Great job, everyone!
Over the past few weeks, several of you have voiced concerns to me about the 'overly aggressive' behavior of several of the players in both chumash and lacrosse and asked me what is acceptable. Lacrosse is a contact sport and there is a proper way to make contact, which we teach.
Admittedly, I am extremely sensitive to such contact and overreacted back in February during the indoor high school session when my son was injured due to an illegal hit. It really bothers me that such behavior is not discouraged more by coaches and parents. Some say, 'That's just lacrosse', but that is not true. I am a purist when it comes to the sport and wholeheartedly believe we should be working to elevate the level of play of the game instead of playing down to the lowest level of talent and simply accepting this unacceptable behavior as unavoidable. Our lacrosse community is not there yet but, rest assured that Spartan Lacrosse will continue to teach and encourage proper technique and do our best to provide your player(s) with a safe and fun environment.
