2015 Fall League:
I didn't realize what weekend this was when I contacted the City to reserve the field for Sunday afternoons back in June! Despite that, we had a good turnout for what was an extremely HOT day!
We had 20 kids show up, 12 returners, 8 new players from grades 4 through 8, and a few high school players who helped out. We are attracting some good talent and look to be as strong if not stronger next Spring.
Improving the Level of Play:
I continue to get comments about this topic.
Several of us are continuing to do everything we can to grow the sport here in Wichita and recruit players. Last year, three local players were offered scholarships to National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) member schools schools in Kansas to play lacrosse. Our goal is to continue that trend and see several more players in the years to come attend schools in all NCAA divisions but that will only be possible if we continue to grow and improve lacrosse in Wichita.
All of us, parents, coaches, and players, must work to increase the level of play instead of playing down to the lowest level of talent as seems to be the prevailing mindset. Several parents have mentioned to me how undisciplined and overly aggressive some of the other players in this league are compared to our players. Speaking with the mother of a High School player today, she said that has been a major problem for several years and one reason she does not believe lacrosse in Wichita will grow unless people get on board and actively work to teach real lacrosse like our program attempts to do. Most athletes play to their strenghts; athletes who don't have much talent or don't know what they're doing tend to play more physical.
Lacrosse is a fantastic sport that has so much to offer players. We will continue to do our part to ensure that proper lacrosse is taught. Thanks for your support of our program!
2016 Possible Changes: Travel Team:
One of the thoughts we are kicking around for the 2016 season is a competitive travel team that will be separate from and in addition to our regular team. We almost did that this year but decided instead to divide the players into two lacrosse teams.
We have had preliminary discussions on how it will be set up but nothing has been finalized. One thought is to have the team play in 3 to 4 tournaments. Additional cost and practices will be part of this. More information to follow.
